State visit to Russia

The newly re-elected President of the Republic of the Congo made his first visit to Russia at the end of April 2026. This state visit took place against a backdrop of strengthening diplomatic relations between Moscow and Brazzaville, amidst a realignment of international alliances.

During the visit, the head of state was received by his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin. Discussions focused on several key areas of cooperation, notably in the fields of energy, natural resources, security, and infrastructure.
The two leaders took the opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to consolidating their long-standing strategic partnership, built on relations established over decades.
Economically, the visit aims to attract more Russian investment to the Congo, particularly in the oil and mining sectors, which are pillars of the country’s economy. Agreements or memoranda of understanding could also cover training, technology, and other forms of cooperation.

Beyond the bilateral aspects, this meeting has significant geopolitical implications. It illustrates the president's desire to diversify his international partners against a backdrop of tensions between Russia and Western countries.

The President is thus seeking to strengthen the Republic of Congo’s position on the international stage while maintaining the country’s diplomatic and economic balance.
