Félix Tshisekedi met Denis Sassou-N'Guesso in his fiefdom of Oyo

The president of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Felix Tshisekedi, met on Sunday, February 5, 2023 with his counterpart from Congo-Brazzaville Denis Sassou-N'Guesso in his stronghold of Oyo, located 400 kilometers north of the Congolese capital. Insecurity in the eastern DRC was on the agenda of their talks.

During this state visit, after their lunch, the two presidents met for a few hours face to face away from the microphones and cameras. Neither of them made a statement. Neither issued a statement at the end of their discussions which, according to a diplomatic source, focused on bilateral relations and the security situation in the sub-region.

Brazzaville hosted a meeting of the United Nations Standing Advisory Committee in January which called for an end to the violence in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

It was during a visit to Oyo in June 2022 that President Félix Tshisekedi clearly accused Rwanda of being the main supporter of the M23 rebel group at the root of the instability in the eastern DRC. Before welcoming his neighbor, Denis Sassou-N'Guesso received Rwandan diplomatic chief Vincent Biruta on January 25, bearing a message whose content has remained confidential.

President Denis Sassou-N'Guesso has good relations with both Felix Tshisekedi and Paul Kagame. He therefore calls on both parties to dialogue and appeasement.
